Firsts

This was originally posted on my LinkedIn.

There’s a first time for everything. First kiss. First heartbreak. First job. First kid. First home.

This morning, I experienced my first layoff. I was one of the 12,000 folks let go by Google.

On one hand, I’m terribly sad. Google is an amazing company, and Area 120 was the best place to work inside Google. It was the privilege of my career to work with such a high concentration of incredibly talented, driven people. Area 120 made me a better leader, a better product manager, and a better human being.

On the other hand, I’m excited. This first, like all firsts, isn’t an end, but a beginning. All firsts have nexts.

So while I don’t know exactly what is next, I’m already itching to get started.

Here’s to the next first.

Update as of July ‘23: I’m back at Google, working on Google Slides.
